DIAGNOSTIC METHODS

DIAGNOSTIC METHODS

Diagnosis is the basis of treatment. I remember a doctor, who was famous for checking pulse and analyzing the nature of disease. I believe that diagnosing perfectly is the greatest tool for a doctor or therapist. In modern medicine, if one diagnose properly, treatment is easy. Since the beginning of medical science, different methods have been used to diagnose a disease. It can be divided into two parts. a) Eastern, b) Western. The Eastern system is more traditional and western system more scientific.
SCIENTIFIC DIAGNOSIS: Machines, chemicals and instruments are key ingredients in the scientific diagnostic system. These methods are used by pathological doctors as well as other therapists. Unfortunately Ayurveda, Natureopathy and other healing treatments etc. are relying more on the scientific system rather than on the traditional system. Doctors of modern treatments generally want to impress their patients by lab tests. Even patients also want from their doctors that doctors should write so as to exhibit knowledge and boast confidence. My conjecture is neither of the diagnosis is bad or good, both can be used judiciously.
Diagnostic methods are like footsteps of a disease. Chronic diseases are a proof that there is a disturbance in the YIN energy. Swelling below the eye means water retention in the kidney. Kidney is responsible for water retention and controls the movement of the water descending way. The oriental method would suggest putting Rajma seed on the kidney corresponding point for complete balance of kidney energy. Modern diagnosis does give an actual picture of the disease, but only when the disease has already established itself. Whereas the oriental diagnosis checks the tongue, pulse and the pallor of the skin to judge the onset of a disease. Thus creating a protocol of treatment.
Interestingly, UNANI, AYURVEDA and SIDDHA system use the pulse diagnostic method which is quite reliable. Accupressure predicts by pressing the corresponding points. If those points are painful, then it means that there is a problem in that organ. I have come across many experts who diagnose a problem which was later confirmed by doctors.
In oriental diagnosis there are 4 different methods by which a health problem can be diagnosed. 1) Inspection 2) Listening 3) Questioning 4) Palpitation.
1) Inspection means to find out by observing. Eg: The way patient enters, walks, sits, talks.
2) Listening means sound of voice, lungs, breath and heart.
3) Questioning means asking specific questions about menstruation, sex life and diet.
4) Palpitation means to find out whether pain increases or decreases.
In oriental medicine, patient is to be classified into a combination of these syndromes.
1) Emptiness
2) Fullness
3) Coldness
4) Hotness
5) Yin
6) Yang
The Syndrome is diagnosed not the disease. To reach a conclusion, the physician is dependent on his own sense organs.
Diagnosis by visual inspection. 5 different items to be inspected,
1) Nutritional condition and development of the skeleton
2) Colour and condition of the skin
3) Condition of the 5 sense organs.
4) Condition of nail and hair
5) Condition and colour of excretion.
